['aɪrəs, englisch; Kurzwort für Infrared Astronomical Satellite, »Infrarot- Astronomiesatellit«], erster Satellit für Infrarotastronomie, der von den Niederlanden, Großbritannien und der NASA am 26. 1. 1983 in Umlauf gebracht wurde. Während seiner Funktionszeit von rd. zehn Monaten gelangen erstmals umfassende Himmelsdurchmusterungen (rd. 97 %) in verschiedenen Spektralbändern des infraroten Wellenlängenbereiches (12, 25, 60, 100 μm). Zur Gewährleistung einer hohen Empfindlichkeit wurden das 60-cm-Spiegelteleskop und die Halbleitersensoren mit flüssigem Helium auf 10 beziehungsweise 1,8 K gekühlt. 1984 wurde ein Verzeichnis mit 245 000 Infrarot-Punktquellen herausgegeben.
